4th photography contest “Photography and the world of work” dedicated to tourism kicks off

Selected photos will be exhibited in the Granaries of Villa Mimbelli Livorno, March 23, 2021 – Entitled“We will return to travel: work in tourism between tradition and new forms of hospitality,” the 4th “Photography and the world of work” photography competition promoted by the Carlo Laviosa Foundation and the Municipality of Livorno is being held.
After the last all-special edition dedicated to work in Livorno despite Covid, this new one is about the tourism sector that defines our cultural identity, animated and kept alive by the work of so many skilled people, a valuable human capital that, before Covid, accounted for almost one-fifth of total Italian economic activity.
The competition was presented at a press conference attended by Livorno City Councilor for Culture Simone Lenzi; Piero Starita, advisor to the Foundation; Simona Manfredini, Laviosa Foundation’s head of organization and public relations; and Laura Bolognesi, representing the regional FIAF.
“This competition,” said Councillor Lenzi, “relates the Laviosa Foundation’s vocation for work and its special focus on photography. Work has always been at the center of the Foundation’s activities and we have seen it declined in many forms. This year the title of the competition is under the banner of hope for a sector, tourism, that has paid high costs for the pandemic. Now is the time to start questioning the post-pandemic outlook that will never be the same as in the past, and this contest could be a tool for reflection. We are also happy because this time the Granaries will be dedicated for the display of photographs.”
The competition, open to professional and amateur photographers who are 18 years of age or older, will expire at midnight on May 16 and will end with an exhibition organized at the Granaries of Villa Mimbelli in Livorno from June 20 to August 15, 2021; the winners’ awards ceremony will also be held on the opening day of the exhibition.
“The world of work is a recurring leitmotif of the Laviosa Foundation,” continued Piero Starita, “our goal is to involve young people by trying to break down this gap that is created between the younger generations and the labor sector; if the Foundation finds the right path for this, we will achieve our goal. This fourth competition will talk about tourism, which will necessarily have to be reinvented, to think that everything will go back to the way it was after the pandemic is unthinkable. Our hope is that the participation of photographers will be broad and will also come from afar, because Fondazione Laviosa wants to take Livorno to the world.”
Participants in the 4th competition “Photography and the World of Work “are asked to give a testimony of work in tourism, which does not exclude a vision of what they would not like to lose of our way of hosting and welcoming, or a critical or ironic suggestion, but which nevertheless focuses attention on the human capital essential to that immense productive resource of our country that is tourism. Registration has a cost of € 30. 00 (€ 25.00 for FIAF members). A jury of the highest caliber is scheduled for this edition, with Letizia Battaglia, internationally renowned photographer and honorary citizen of Livorno, as president; Federica Berzioli, editor of Il Fotografo; Giacomo Bretzel, professional photographer; Maddalena Fossati, director of Condè Nast Traveller; Giovanni Laviosa, president of the Carlo Laviosa Foundation; Simone Lenzi, councilor for culture of the City of Livorno; Angelo Loy, documentary filmmaker and president of the Giuseppe Loy Foundation; Carlo Lucarelli, AFI EFI EFIAP, FIAF regional delegate for Tuscany.
The jury is coordinated by Simona Manfredini (Carlo Laviosa Foundation) and Alessandro Paron (TST Art Gallery).
“The theme chosen is fundamental for the future of our country,” concluded Simona Manfredini, “The gaze of photographers can help us glimpse the way out of the very deep crisis in which tourism, hospitality and hospitality, that is, the spearhead of Italian entrepreneurial skills, are successfully exiting. In an effort to attract photographers from all over Italy, we have focused on a jury with personalities of the highest level and increased the amount of prizes. President of the competition jury will be Letizia Battaglia, an internationally renowned photographer, who -thanks also to Serafino Fasulo- has become a friend of the Foundation. The Laviosa Foundation, therefore, launches its 2021 activities today and a path that begins with the Competition and the subsequent exhibition of the selected photographs and will continue until the fall with the Martin Parr exhibition, postponed from last year, we will inaugurate (hopefully) at the end of September.”
